A visit to Kedah make for an interesting tourism Malaysia travel vacation, with the green padi fields, makes for a soothing journey in one of the most ancient state in Malaysia. It has a history that dates back to the 5th century A.D. with a land area of 9,425 square kilometres. Kedah is one of Malaysia’s main rice producing state, and thus while travelling in this state you can see green padi rice fields stretching out on a relative flat agricultural land.

Kedah shares a border with Southern Thailand’s Songkhla and Yala province and you can actually travel to Southern Thailand via the Bukit Kayu Hitam town in Kedah using the PLUS North-South Highway. In fact many Malaysians do that to visit the popular Hatyai town in South Thailand for shopping, eating and some cheap good Thai massage.

Kedah is home to Asia’s fist Geopark, and listed in UNESCO. The geopark has very unusual rock formation and provides interesting natural scenery for those who love the great outdoors. Other interesting outdoor activities include canopy walk, where walkways are constructed at tree top level. Initially such canopy walks were created for botanist to study the tree top flora but turn out to be such an interesting eco-tourism activity as well too! Kedah has an interesting history and if you have a penchant for old archaeological history then head out to Bujang Valley, where you can find some of the richest archaeological site in Malaysia. This place was a thriving Hindu-Buddhist civilisation and trading centre in the South-East Asia region from 3rd to 12th century A.D.

Time for some relaxation! Let’s head out to Langkawi Island, the jewel in the crown of Kedah. Langkawi is part of a 99 island archipelago with beautiful hidden coves and beaches. Langkawi boast many stretches of white sandy beaches hidden in some luxurious beach side resort. For those who want to explore the main island of Langkawi, the Kuah town is where you do some shopping for knick-knacks and crafts and duty free products. Head into the interior of Langkawi Island and learn about the myths and legends of Mahsuri, a beautiful maiden who was unjustly accused of adultery who was put to death but not before she laid a curse on Langkawi Island that was finally broken recently.
